Salam and hi y’all..
The organizing committees of Minggu Apresiasi Seni dan Budaya – Independence Week 2009 or better well known as MARSYA-IW ’09 have had our family day on 13th July 2009 at Teluk Batik, a one-hour drive from UTP.
The objective of the family day is for us to get to know each other more as we are going to work together in this event. We started our journey at 2.30 p.m. and as soon as we reached there, we had an ice breaking session and a few games.
After Asar prayer, we had our BBQ dinner near the beach and a simple ceremony of welcoming the committee members as a fresh start and to boost up their spirit in being a cooperative member towards the success of this event.
On its beautiful wings, we hope that the family day will be a good beginning for our event that will fly to you in UTP this July 2009 semester. See you soon!
The Malaysian flag was designed by Mohamed Hamzah, a 29 year old architect working in Public Works Deparment (JKR) in Johor Bahru, Johor.
He entered a flag design competition in 1947 with two designs which he completed within two weeks. The first design was a green flag with blue kris in the middle, surrounded by 15 white stars. The second design which was accepted to the final three was similar to the current flag but with a 5 sided star. The flag design competition attracted 373 entries and voting were made by the general public via post.
Dato' Onn Jaafar met with Mohamed Hamzah after he won the competition and suggested the star is changed to an 11 sided star to reflect the Federated Malay States and the 3 Straits Settlements. Mohamed Hamzah died just shy of his 75th birthday on 13 February 1993 in Jalan Stulang Baru, Kampung Melayu Majidee, Johor.
The Malaysian flag was approved by King George VI on 19 May 1950 and was first raised in front of Istana Selangor on 26 May 1950.
The design of horizontal lines with alternating red and white bands shared with only two other countries in the world; United States of America and Liberia.
In order to make the youth, especially the UTP community to realize about the identity of Malaysian art and culture and the significant of our independence, we are pleased to organize this prestigious event. With the theme “Revolution of Culture through Independence”, it is hoped that students and staffs of UTP can widen their perspectives in viewing the arts and culture through Malaysia’s Independence Day. The one month event stands for exhibition, competitions, performances, trip, and other activities that completely describe about the importance and uniqueness of Malaysian arts and culture and its independence.
Obviously, with all commitment and full support from all parties, this program will be successfully organized and is expected to achieve superior feedback from the targeted community.

Secretariat Rakan Muda of UTP (SRMUTP) has taken the initiative to organize an art and culture event under the Art and Culture Lifestyle of SRMUTP. The event was successfully held on the 4th of August until 8th of August 2008. MARSYA ’08 consists of the Art and Culture Exhibition, the Art and Culture Competition, and the Malam Prihatin Sanggar Mustika, as the finale of MARSYA ’08.
The Art and Culture Exhibition were successfully held from 4th of August to 5th of August 2008. The exhibitors that involved in the exhibition were Balai Seni Lukis Negara, Perbadanan Kemajuan Kraftangan Perak, and Mariwasa Kraftangan Sdn. Bhd.
During the exhibition, the students can feel the hands-on experience themselves because they can try out how to shape the ceramic and to sew the embroidery. Besides the hands-on experience, a large number of students were attracted to the batik colouring, where they can colour the batik provided themselves.
During the exhibition, the Balai Seni Lukis Negara brought a few impressive drawings to be displayed. They also provided an artist to draw the caricature of students who are interested. Mariwasa Kraftangan Sdn. Bhd. also contributed in the exhibition, where they brought medals, coins, jewellery, and a few handicrafts to be displayed and to be purchased at a reasonable price.
The Art and Culture Competition were held during MARSYA ’08 to give the platform for students who are interested in the arts and culture to develop their potential through competition. The competitions were Wau-making, Poem Writing, Poster Designing, and Calligraphy (Khat).
The finale of MARSYA ’08, Malam Prihatin Sanggar Mustika was successfully held on the 8th of August 2008, at Multi-Purpose Hall. The first performance is from Tronoh Theater Shop. The Dikir Barat Team of SRMUTP performed next with three impressive songs, followed by Read-One, the nasyid group which entertained the audiences with two songs. The night was continued with poem recitation. Finally, the orphanages from Yayasan Amanah An-Nur Maisarah performed nasyid.
We are very grateful since we received positive feedbacks from students of UTP and the student bodies of UTP. We hope that MARSYA will become an annual event in UTP and are looking forward for a positive reply and supports from the SSS Department.

The Joget is a couple dance and the tempo is fairly quick with
the a feeling of teasing and playing between the partners.
In Malacca it is better known as Chakunchak.
This possibly refers to the rhythm of the movements of the feet in
Joget where there is transference of weight to the beat 1& 2, rather similar to
a ‘step ball change’ in Western dance.
This is sometimes called a ‘double step’.
A simplified version or sometimes referred to as the ‘single step’ includes
the transfer of weight or ‘ball change’ but with just a tap of the second foot.
